7-Minute WorkoutWith the astronomical cost of healthcare in the United States, we believe that good health is increasingly becoming not only a quality of life issue, but a significant pocketbook issue as well.  In addition to walking using my trusty pedometer and making many small changes towards healthy eating, I try to get as much exercise in as I possibly can.

It’s really difficult with two young daughters to find an hour or more to go to the gym and workout, so I was excited to see this article entitled The Scientific 7-Minute Workout at the top of the New York Times’ ‘Most Emailed’ list a few months ago.

It looked like a great set of full-body exercises that didn’t require any fancy gear – just your own body weight and a chair.  I tried it a few times and really enjoyed it, but like so many things, I didn’t do it long enough to establish a habit and it just fell by the wayside.

I recently came across this YouTube video that runs you through the entire 7-Minute Workout, and it just makes it so easy to find the motivation to do the circuit.  This definitely provided the push I needed and now I’m doing the workout 5+ days a week.

I highly recommend bookmarking it and giving it a try!  One run through the circuit definitely gets my heart rate up considerably and I tried it twice in a row over the weekend and was in a full-body sweat by the end of it.  But yet it’s quite easy to do because mentally you know it’s just 30 seconds for each exercise and you’re moving on to the next one.  For me this is the perfect workout and I hope you enjoy it too.

If you test it out, let me know what you think below in the comment section…

I don’t know why but 7 Minute workout made me think of a scene from There’s Something About Mary where the crazy hitchhiker’s idea was 7 minute Abs to compete with the popular 8 Minute Abs. Anyways, sorry for going off a tangent…I think a 7 minute workout would be great…especially with children and being constrained with time. I do believe that you don’t need to go to a gym or have fancy equipment to get a good workout. Even before the baby, I preferred running, push-ups, crunches, etc. Actually now with the baby, he makes me do squats while holding him…it seems to be the only way for him to stop crying…I guess he likes the up and down motion!

That is such a funny movie — great reference!
This really is a full body workout and the whole thing, including transition time, is 9 minutes exactly. Tough to beat that…
I have a $15 pullup bar at home, but like you said, you can do pretty well otherwise with just pushups, squats, lunges, calf raises, crunches, wall-sits, etc.
I try to get in some exercise any way I can, so if I’m standing at the copier at work, I’ll do a set of calf raises, or maybe a one-leg squat hold (switch in the middle if I’m copying a long document). As long as my co-workers don’t think I’m nuts, I’m way ahead of the game…

It is amazing how little time it takes to get a good burn. I’ll check out the video for sure. What kind of pedometer do you use? I’m thinking of investing in a Fitbit, do you know anything about them?

Glad to hear it — I think you’ll enjoy the workout. I have a Fitbit and I absolutely love it. I’ve had it for 15 months now and I wear it every single day. I’ve averaged over 10,000 steps per day since buying it and I estimate that I was averaging under 5,000 steps per day before I owned it. So that’s an additional 2.5 miles walking per day for 15-months! Here’s my article on walking and the Fitbit.
